You Down Bad

1) On June 28, 2009, at approximately 10:00 p.m., officers responded to gunfire in the 2000 block of Baronne Street and discovered the victim of a homicide lying near the sidewalk. He had been shot multiple times. Central City, Murder

2) A shooting at 4551 Skyview Drive in eastern New Orleans has left two males and five females injured. The victims were celebrating as part of a large repast gathering around 9 p.m. [Monday] when two suspects opened fire on the group. The gunmen fired on the group, retreated into a nearby alley, fired again, and fled in a burgundy or maroon Lincoln Town Car with large rims. New Orleans East, Shooting

3) On Saturday, June 27, 2009, at 3:15am, witnesses standing near Canal
and S Peters heard several gunshots and observed the victim suffering
from a gunshot wound to the leg. The suspects fled on S Peters toward
Esplanade in a black pickup truck. French Quarter, Shooting

4) On Thursday, June 25, 2009, at approximately 11:31 p.m., a Sixth District officer on patrol heard gunfire coming from the intersection of Danneel Street and Washington Ave. The victim sustained several gunshot wounds to the body and provided few details about the incident. 5) On 06-25-09 at approximately 9:20pm, Officers of the First
District responded to a shooting in the 3700 block of Baudin
Street. Upon arrival, the Officers observed the victim suffering
from gunshot wounds. The victim later listed in good condition at

6) On Thursday, June 25, 2009 at approximately 5:56 pm, the victim was
standing on a porch located in the 2200 block of Cadiz Street. At that
time a subject later identified as Burtell Thomas, black male, date of
birth 4-14-83 fired several shots which struck the victim mortally
wounding him. The suspect fled in a silver four-door Pontiac in an
unknown direction. Uptown, Murder

7) On 06-23-09 at approximately 2:30am, the victim was standing in front
of his residence in the 2500 block of Tulane Ave. The victim
observed a dark colored vehicle approaching, at that time he heard
gunshots. The victim felt a pain in his left thigh and was
immediately transported to University Hospital where he was listed in

8) On 06-22-09 at approximately 3:00am, the victim was traveling west on
I-10 interstate at which time a black Chevrolet truck approached the
victim and fired 5 or 6 shots in the victim’s direction. The victim
suffered a gunshot wound to his back and was listed in stable

9) On 06/22/09 at approximately 12:25pm, the victim and the suspect
engaged in a physical confrontation in the 2100 block of Lapeyrouse
Street. The suspect then grabbed a machete and struck the victim
several times. 7th Ward, Shooting

10) On 06/21/09 at approximately 11:30pm, the victim was in the 2700 block
of St. Phillip Street, talking to a friend. The victim was
approached by the suspect, who stated “You Down Bad”. The victim
and suspect engaged in a verbal altercation, at that time the suspect
pulled out a small pipe and struck the victim in the top of his

It's Hotter

A dead body was discovered floating in Bayou St. John Monday afternoon, New Orleans police said. The corpse washed up near the intersection of Lafitte and Moss streets. Bayou St. John, ?

On Monday, June 22, 2009 at about 3:45pm the victim was walking in the
3400 block of Urquhart St. The victim observed the wanted vehicle stopped at the intersection of Gallier and Urquhart St, occupied by two subjects. One of the subjects opened the rear passenger door and the other subject opened the front passenger door and began to shoot. The victim fled the scene to await the arrival of police and EMS.

On Sunday, June 21, 2009 at about 9:15pm the victim was walking in the
2300 block of N. Johnson St. The victim stated the wanted subject
approached him from behind and started to hit him. They began to
fight until the wanted subject produced a handgun and shot at
the victim, who fled.

On Sunday, June 21, 2009, at 4:05am, the victims, W/M & 2 W/Fs, were
involved in a verbal altercation with an unknown black male and an
unknown white male. A short while later, the victims were standing on
the corner of Dauphine and St Louis when they were approached again by
the two suspects, who brandished a bat and struck the victims and sprayed them with pepper spray. The suspects then fled on foot in an unknown direction.

On Saturday, June 20, 2009, at 5:30am, a police officer on patrol
heard gunshots at the corner of Burgundy and St Louis. As the officer
neared the corner, he was approached by the victim, B/M, was stated
that he had just been shot and identified a black male standing near
the intersection as the suspect. The suspect fired one shot at the
officer and then fled on foot.

On Saturday, June 20th, 2009 at around 7:15 P.M., the victim was
attending a repast in the 4200 block of Hollygrove Street, when an
unknown b/m subject ran up to him and shot him in both of his legs,
breaking them. A second victim, who was also attending the repast,
heard the shots and ran to a nearby relative's home, where he realized
that he had been shot in the left leg.

Telly Hankton, described as a drug-dealing murderer who has long eluded justice, will remain jailed until Friday, when two judges consider whether to let him out on bond on charges of gunning down two men in revenge killings. Hankton surrendered to New Orleans police Monday afternoon after police implored the public to help track him down in connection with the Saturday night killing of Jesse Reed. Hankton, already awaiting trial in the 2008 murder of Darnell Stewart, was out on a $1 million bond when Reed was killed. Both Stewart and Reed were booked in 2007 in the murder of Hankton's cousin, George "Cup" Hankton III, 40. But neither was ever brought to trial. Just before midnight Saturday, Reed, 26, died on the pavement from gunshot wounds. Police collected 59 casings at the crime scene that unfolded in the 2300 block of Terpsichore Street. To make bond [the 1st time], Hankton used six properties that he said were worth $770,000 -- all of them owned by other people. He made up the rest with a $230,000 commercial surety from Tynekia M. Buckley Bail Bonds, which required him to put down 13 percent, or $29,900.


ON FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 2009 AT OR ABOUT 10:30PM, THE VICTIM WAS VISITING A FRIEND, WHEN THE WANTED SUBJECT BECAME UPSET. THE WANTED SUBJECT WALKED TO HIS VEHICLE AND RETURNED TO THE SIDEWALK IN FRONT OF THE RESIDENCE. THE SUBJECT BEGAN SHOOTING AT THE VICTIM AT WHICH TIME THE VICTIM WAS STRUCK IN HIS ABDOMEN. THE VICTIM FLED TO TRAPIER STREET AND DINKINS STREET. N.O East, Shooting

On Friday, June 19, 2009 at about 9:24pm, the victim was at theintersection of N. Johnson and Painters St. AT about this time thevictim was shot. St. Roch, Shooting

On Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at about 2:00 am the victim was in the2700 block of St. Claude walking home. At about this time he wasstruck on the back of his head. The victim said four unknown blackmales began calling him names and about this time one of the subjectsstruck him with a cased window. St. Claude Ave, Assault with venestration

On June 16, 2009 at approximately 2:20 pm, the victim was seated on a
porch at an unknown location on Colapissa Street. At that time a black
Chevrolet truck stopped in the street and two unknown suspects
starting shooting at him. The victim received two gunshot wounds to
his right leg. The victim was uncooperative and refused to give a
description of the suspects.

It's Hot

1) A man accused of shooting a woman in the face Sunday in Chalmette. The woman he shot remains in critical condition. The shooting occured around 10:30 Sunday morning in a second-floor apartment in the 300 block of Plantation Drive. Labee was arrested shortly after the shooting. The womanwas India Dregory, also 20. She was Labee's girlfriend. Dregory was shot at close range in the face with a 12-gauge shotgun. The gun was loaded with "birdshot'' Chalmette, Attempted Murder

2) A 17-year-old from Kenner was shot in the head early Saturday morning outside a LaPlace night club. Xquisite Club on Airline Highway. Another person, a 21-year-old Kenner woman whose name was not released, was shot in the back of the neck. Laplace, Attempted Murder

3) 2200 block of L.B. Landry. On 06/14 at 2200hrs, officers responded to an aggravated battery by shooting. Upon arrival officers observed the victim lying on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Algiers, Shooting/Attempted Murder

4) On Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at approximately 4:00 p.m., a full size brown pick-up truck stopped in the 2700 block of LaSalle Street and the two occupants described as black males began firing weapons at another subject. That subject was described as a black male wearing a white shirt and red shorts with a dark complexion and he was shooting back at the subjects in the truck. The victim was struck once in the upper left leg. Central City, Shooting

5) On 06/16 at 1010hrs, officers responded to a shooting on 1600 block of Newton. Upon arrival officers located the victim lying face down at the said location (parking area of Lawson's Grocery) suffering from numerous gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to University Hospital but while en route the victim was pronounce dead as a result of the injuries sustained in this incident. Although no witnesses came forward on scene, it is likely that the motive for this homicide was robbery as the victim never made it into the store to fill the ATM machine. The owner of the store indicated that the victim filled the machine 2-3 times weekly and to his knowledge the victim did so unarmed. Algiers, Murder/Robbery

6) 1700 block of Newton. On 06/12 at 1000hrs, victim and subject (brother) became involved in a verbal altercation regarding money. Altercation turned physical, at which time the subject relocated to the rear of the business and grabbed a handgun. Subject pointed the weapon at the victim at which time the victim fled the store fearing for his safety. Subject fired
several shots towards the victim, striking him multiple times. Victim was transported to University Hospital. Algiers, Shootinjg

7) On Sunday, June 14, 2009, at about 11:41pm the victim and the arrested
subject were in the 2700 block of N. Roman St. At about this time they
became involved in an argument. The argument escalated and the
arrested subject cut the victim. The subject was arrested on the
scene for domestic battery. St. Roch, Battery

8) 6/17/09. The victim and her mother, Kim Miles (B/F 03-14-1962), became involved
in an altercation at their residence in the 1400 block of Senate
Street
, during which Kim Miles stabbed her in the back of her left
arm. Responding officers were able to apprehend and arrest Kim Miles,
who was arrested and charged in the above offense. Gentilly, Battery

9) On Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at 10:01 p.m. the victim was within the
1200 block of South Saratoga Street near the corner of Erato Street
and South Saratoga Street on a bicycle. The victim became involved in
an argument with a black male later learned to be Darryl Moore. Moore
produced a black semi-automatic handgun from his front waistband and
fired several rounds at the victim. The victim was struck in the leg
and began to flee the area on foot. The victim heard several more
gunshots and was struck again in his leg. The The victim fled the

Grab the Wall

1) Someone shot a 36-year-old Harvey man in the head and killed him late Sunday in Algiers, according to authorities. Lawrence Brown Jr. was shot about 10:05 p.m. near the corner of L.B Landry Ave and Erie Street, not far from the Fischer housing development. A bullet struck Brown in his head. McClebb's death was a retaliation killing, police said, but they have yet to make an arrest. Algiers, Murder

2) Roy Belton, 41, was found shot dead in the 4400 block of Shalimar Drive in eastern New Orleans about 1 a.m. Sunday. Police haven't announced any suspects or motive in Belton's killing. New Orleans East, Murder

3) On Sunday, June 14, 2009, at 12:a5am, the victim, B/F, was standing in the 700 block of St Louis when she approached an unknown black male who was sitting in his vehicle. The victim asked the suspect if he would play some “bounce” music on his car stereo. The suspect produced a handgun and pointed it at the victim. The suspect then fled in the vehicle. 4) On Saturday, June 13, 2009 at about 12:50am the victim was in the 2400 block of
N. Villere St. At about this time a dark colored pick-up truck drove east bound passing the residence, the wanted subject in the rear bed of the truck started shooting striking the victim. About 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Leroy Harris, 22, bled to death from the gunshot wound to the theigh. St. Roch, Murder

5) Three teenagers attending a Sweet 16 party at a Gretna hotel Saturday night were shot, police officials said. The victims -- ages 15, 16 and 18 -- were in stable condition and recovering Sunday at LSU Interim Public Hospital, Gretna Deputy Chief Charles Whitmer said. At least one person fired bullets into a crowd gathered in a parking lot at 1411 Claire Ave., Whitmer said, in front of the America's Best Value Inn. One victim was struck in the back. Another was hit in the neck. A third was grazed by a bullet. Two victims were male and one was female, Whitmer said. He didn't know who was which age. Gretna, Shooting

6) On Friday, June 12, 2009 at about 3:00am the victim was in the 700 block of Louisa St. The wanted subject and the victim were engaged in a conversation, when at this time the wanted subject struck the victim on the forehead with an unknown object. Bad

1) On Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 at around 2:30 A.M., officers responded to a call of gunshots fired in the 4200 block of Hollygrove Street. Upon their arrival, the officers found a b/m lying in the street, face down, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. Hollygrove, Murder

2)On Saturday, June 6th, 2009 at around 9:00 P.M., the victim was outside of his home in the 6000 block of Wilton Drive when he was approached by Larry Dillon (B/M 12-09-1967), an acquaintance, who was armed with a semi-auto handgun. Mr. Dillon pointed the gun the victim and ordered him to lay down, which he refused, knocking the gun out of his face. Mr. Dillon fired the weapon. The victim ran inside of his home, with Mr. Dillon pursuing and firing two more times at him before fleeing the scene. Responding officers obtained a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Dillon for twenty-two counts of aggravated assault. Gentilly/Lakeview area, Shooting

3) A 17-year-old Terrytown man was arrested on charges of aggravated rape and first-degree murder of an 8-month-old child Saturday [6/7/09] afternoon. Arnold T. Ross, of Terrytown, was booked into the Jeff. P. Correctional Facility. No bond is available on the first-degree murder charge. Ross was arrested after officers responded to a call of an unresponsive infant at 1656 Gary Court, Apt. B, near Gretna. The infant, Da-Von Lonzo, was taken to Ochsner Westbank where he was pronounced dead. Gretna area, Rape, Murder

St. Roch

1) A 17-year-old was shot to death Sunday morning at the intersection of North Claiborne Avenue and Frenchmen Street. The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. St. Roch, Murder

2) On Sunday, June 7, 2009 at about 11:30 am, the victim and the arrested subject were in the 1600 block of Mandeville St. A physical altercation ensued. The arrested subject picked up a pair of scissors and stabbed the victim. The victim is in stable condition.

3) On Saturday, June 6, 2009, the victims were driving in the 2300 block of Allen St. Upon reaching the intersection of Allen & N. Rocheblave, they stopped for a stop sign. The wanted subject Rolland was at the aforementioned intersection, along with several other male subjects. The victims parked the vehicle in the 2300 block of Allen St., when the wanted subject passed in a silver Altima. The wanted subject pointed a silver handgun in the victim’s direction and fired. The victims fled inside of a residence.

4) New Orleans police are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run early Saturday morning that left one pedestrian dead and another injured in Central City around 1:45 a.m. when the driver struck two men who were trying to cross the thoroughfare at South Saratoga. A 38-year-old local man was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 50-year-old local male was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

5) On Saturday, June 6, 2009, at about 3:05 am, the victim was walking in the 4200 block of Dumaine St when he was shot. The victim walked to the 900 block of N Hennessy St and collapsed from the gunshot wound. A witness heard loud noises outside and then observed the victim. The victim suffered a shotgun blast and was in critical condition. No suspects were observed.

6) On Saturday, June 6, 2008 at approximately 8:58 pm the victims were standing on a porch in the 2700 block of Amelia Street. At that time they observed a brown or gray four door sedan approach with the headlights turned off. As the vehicle got closer to the victims two of the black males started firing an unknown type handgun at them. The vehicle fled on Amelia. Victim #1 sustained a gunshot wound to the buttocks and thigh. Victim #2 sustained a gunshot wound to the buttocks.

7) On Thursday, June 04, 2009, at about 10:17pm, the victims were driving in the 3400 block of W. St. Roch St. At about this time they observed the wanted subjects also on St. Roch driving a tan Infiniti. The driver of the vehicle was known to the victims. The wanted vehicle stopped and the passenger exited and began to fire several shots at the victim’s vehicle. The victims fled the scene.

8) On Monday, June 1, 2009 at about 3:40am the victim stated he was traveling on the I-10 East bound and upon reaching Elysian Fields, the wanted vehicle pulled up to his vehicle. The wanted subject (passenger) began to shoot at his (victim) vehicle. The victim continued to drive east bound and the wanted vehicle exited at Elysian Fields.

Big and Easy

A reminder to the nola.com poster who wrote the following:

"New Orleans murder blog 2009 as of 5/25 listed
83 murders. (They now list only an additional 2 although there have been more than 2 in the past week). There have now been 9 since that date....in Orleans Parish alone. Riley just can't add."

We report any known murders in Orleans, Jefferson, and St. Bernard parishes, so the number you've got - 83 - may include murders outside Riley's domain. We don't keep our own statistics because we don't think this blog should be thought of as an authority on its subject matter. We just report whatever we hear or read about. Still, we know what you're saying.

1) A 42-year-old man was shot dead Wednesday night in Old Jefferson after a "drug deal went bad". The shooting occurred about 10 p.m. near the intersection of Burns Street and South Causeway Blvd in Shrewsbury. The dead man was found slumped over the wheel of a truck. A 40-year-old passenger was shot in the lower extremities. He was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. Jefferson, Murder, Shooting

2) Two men were wounded in the 1000 block of Montegut. The shooting happened shortly after 10 p.m. One of the men injured in the New Orleans shooting was was hit in the leg and the other was shot in the forearm. Their conditions were not immediately available. Bywater, Shooting

3) A 20-year-old local man who was shot Sunday in the St. Roch neighborhood died from his injuries Wednesday at LSU Interim Public Hospital. David Jefferson died from a gunshot wound to his head. Pangloss, a bike and a bus

A bit of Leibnizian optimism from our protector:

"A day after the FBI released national crime data that showed New Orleans is still the nation's most murderous city, Police Superintendent Warren Riley took issue with the ranking and noted significant progress has been made. "We know we have a crime problem, but the severity of it depends on what headlines you read."

Here are some headlines:

1) New Orleans police are on the scene of a murder in the 3100 block of North Dorgenois Street, between Clouet and Louisa streets. [No further information available at time of posting]. St. Roch, Murder

2) [Received under the heading: Shooting] On 06-01-09 at approximately 3:16pm, Officers of the First District responded to a shooting in the 1900 block of Old St. Bernard Street. Officers observed the victim suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim later expired. St. Roch, Murder

3) 6900 block of Chef Menteur. On 06-02-09 at 1230pm, the victim was approached by a male who told him the bike he was riding looked like their bike. The victim rode away. The victim noticed the two men following in a car. The victim turned north on Chantilly and heard several gunshots which struck him in the arm and chest. NO East, Shooting

4) On 06/02/09 at 1300hrs, victim was driving a RTA bus. The arrested subject was a passenger on the bus along with her two month old daughter. As the victim approached the intersection of Gen Meyer and Holiday the arrested subject began to open a baby stroller in the bus. The victim informed the subject that she could not open the stroller until she exited. The victim stopped the bus at the intersection of Gen Meyer and St. Nick to which the arrested began to exit the bus with the opened stroller but before exiting the bus turned to face the driver and proceeded to throw baby formula on her from an opened plastic baby bottle. The victim then tried to push the arrested subject off the bus. The arrested subject pulled a steak knife from her rear pocket to stab the victim in the abdomen. In Transit, Escalation

Frying Pan

Below is a long list of very violent crimes.

This happened yesterday:

A 46-year-old construction worker was fatally shot in a stickup attempt Monday afternoon as he and other men were renovating a home in the 7th Ward. The armed robbery took place about 3:15 p.m. just off the sidewalk, in the back yard of an on-the-mend house in the 1900 block of Allen Street. Jose Gutierrez-Aguilar and three other men were mid-sweat, working near a pile of discarded dry wall in the rear of the house when two men approached. The attackers implications grew clear when one of the two men pulled a gun. A struggle ensued over a wallet, police said. Two gunshots rang out, hitting the Gutierrez-Aguilar in the chest.

The following violent incidents occurred last week:

1) On 05/31/09 at approximately 9:38pm, Officers of the First District responded to a stabbing at Orleans Ave. and N. Dorgenois Streets. The Officers observed the victim suffering from several stab wounds to the
back; the victim was listed in good condition. Treme, Stabbing

2) On Sunday, May 31, 2009 at about 9:50pm, officers responded to a shooting at Music & N. Johnson St. Officers observed the victim on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. EMS transported the victim to the hospital for further medical attention. St. Roch, Shooting

3) On Saturday, May 30, 2009, at approximately 12:54 a.m., the victims were walking in the 2000 block of St. Charles Ave. when words were exchanged and two of three suspects produced handguns and began firing at the victims. One of the victims was struck in the buttocks and the suspects made good their escape running uptown on St. Charles Ave. Uptown, Shooting

4) Terrinique T. Winters, 22, was fatally wounded in the 2800 block of Mansfield Avenue. Winters was attending a celebration of O. Perry Walker High School graduates. On 05/30 at 2146hrs, officers responded to gun shots fired in the area and a possible victim at the location. A victim was shot once in the back, while in the rear yard of the location and Williams shot once fatally in the head. An unknown subject approached the location via an adjacent rear yard and began firing a weapon into the crowd, at which time another group of individuals affiliated with the party returned fire. Victim with gunshot wound to back was transported to University Hospital and victim was relocated from the rear yard to the living room by family members. Algiers, Murder, Shooting

5) On Friday, May 29, 2009 at about 6:52am, the victim was driving his vehicle near the intersection of Rabbits and Abundance Sts. At about this time the wanted subject approached the victim’s vehicle and fired several shots into his vehicle striking him. The wanted subject then fled the scene. ?, Shooting

6) On Thursday, May 28, 2009, at about 15:15pm the victims were in the 1300 block of Alabo St. While at the location a black vehicle occupied by several unknown black males pointed weapons at the victims and discharged the weapons. The vehicle then fled the scene. Two of the victims, later died. Lower 9th, Double Murder

7) On 05/25/09 at approximately 2:39am, the victim and a friend were sitting in their Van in the 2100 block of Marais Street. At that time, three unknown black males approached brandishing a long gun as they yelled into the vehicle. One of the suspects fired a shot into the vehicle striking the victim in the arm. 8) On Monday, May 25, 2009 at about 11:02pm the victims were in the 2100 block of N. Dorgenois St., at about this time they observed the wanted subjects running towards them discharging weapons at them. The victims began running from the wanted subjects and at this time they were struck by the bullets. 7th Ward, Shooting

9) On 05/24 at 1857hrs, victim was shot in the head after punching an unknown black male in the face. witness advised that he and his brother (victim) were confronted by the subject that was looking at
him. As the subject approached, he grabbed his front waistband, at which time the victim punched the subject. Subject then shot the victim two times. Victim expired on 05/26/09. Somewhere on Ptolemy, Murder

10) As reported earlier in the week, there was a shooting in the 2700 block St. Andrew Street on May 23, 2009. Central City, Shooting

11) On 05/20 at 2138hrs, officers responded to a vehicle fire in the 7400 block of Rankin. Upon arrival, officers observed a burning vehicle and what appeared to be an unknown subject lying face down, with the upper portion of the torso inside the burning vehicle. Victim was identified on 05/21 and cause of death was gunshot wounds to the head. English Turn, Murder

12) On 05/13/09 at about 12:10pm, Officers responded to an aggravated battery by shooting in the 2000 block of Murl. Upon arrival officers found the victim on a doorstep with multiple gunshot wounds.

13) A shooting Friday (5/29/09) night on St. Claude Avenue near Piety street that ended with an arm wound to a male victim forced vehicles to be rerouted on the heavily-trafficked thoroughfare for more than an hour.
