8th Ward

Today's:
A 21-year-old man was shot to death Monday night outside his home in the 8th Ward in the 2400 Blk of N. Villere. A man and woman standing nearby were wounded and were in surgery late Monday night

Another potential assistant editor, maybe?

Hit and Run
Sunday nights we try to go to bed early so that on Monday morning we can hit the ground running. Truth be told, most mornings we wake up feeling like we got hit by a truck.
This guy too.

A Carrollton man was found dead about 5 a.m. in the 7700 block of Colapissa Street, lying in the roadway with tire marks across his torso.

Although, passersby might say he hit the ground running.

A Blind Eye

A crime camera at the corner of St. Roch Avenue and North Villere Street was not operating when Kendrick Thomas, 22, was killed nearby Monday.... Thomas' is the second killing in three days in this city that occurred near an inoperable crime camera. ....complaints about inoperable -- or merely ineffective and expensive -- crime cameras have dogged the city since it launched the controversial crime-fighting effort....Mayor Ray Nagin's spokeswoman, Ceeon Quiett, confirmed that both cameras don't work -- along with scores of others in the city.

Dude. Cameras don't fight crime, people do. Also, non-functioning surveillance cameras just might be the ultimate incarnation of the blind eye city administration turns towards the murders in this town. Furthermore, can we discuss the fact that Nagin's spokeswoman is named Quiett?

In conclusion, with regards to the question posed by Thomas' stepfather:

"Why, someone please tell me why, that camera isn't working?"

We got one thing to say: this is New Orleans, folks.
