1 Day Left

For those of you who care, or had maybe not noticed, the editors from NOMB have been out of the city for 2 weeks now, our longest stint away from home in 3 years. We've had a lot of explaining to do out on the road, about "the rebuilding," and "the crime," and the what-nots associated with that infinitely fascinating little burg. But, as time draws near for our return, we can't help but wonder, "Are we really going to climb back into this mess?" Hell we walked down the street for the first time in ages with our heads up. What a feeling that was.

A 23-year-old man was shot in the arm and stomach near the Orleans-Jefferson parish line on Thursday night, New Orleans police said.
About 9:30 p.m., 3rd District officers responding to a report of a male shot found the wounded man near the corner of Peach and Monroe streets, just off Airline Highway,

A shooting in Central City on Thursday night sent three people to the hospital in stable condition and left a fourth grazed by a bullet. Shortly before 6 p.m., 6th District officers responding to a call of a shooting found the victims near the corner of Magnolia and Felicity streets. The shooting happened outside, but at least one victim was taken out of a corner barbershop on a stretcher. He ran inside after being hit.

That makes five bullets with five names on them, people.

From Tuesday

We rarely see murders of this ilk here in the NOLA. The details, while sparse, speak to a different type of crime. A planned one.

A woman found floating near Interstate 10 in eastern New Orleans on Tuesday was strangled before being thrown in the water, prompting Coroner Frank Minyard to classify the death a homicide.
An autopsy Wednesday showed the woman died from strangulation and submersion. The body had no scars, tattoos, and was found naked.

Rolling

Nobody can settle it with a game of bloody knuckles anymore it seems.

1)A man was found shot to death early Tuesday outside Passions nightclub in eastern New Orleans. This is the second fatal shooting at this location in two years.

2)A man was found dead near a Marrero canal by a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy Monday morning, and authorities said his death might be connected to a shooting reported Sunday night. The victim, whose name has not been released, was found with a single gunshot wound to the head along the banks of the drainage canal near Rue Louis Phillipe Street and Watling Drive. Found shot in the head, this murder comes on the heals of violent West Bank week, including stabbings and a slew of robberies.

Time Changes

Being 700 miles away, and four hours behind, we wake up this morning to a pile of bodies. Must be spring.

1)Seventh District officers responded around 10:30 a.m. to a report that a body was lying at a dump site in the 8200 block of Almonaster Avenue, about 1.5 miles west of Read Boulevard, police said. The victim, who appeared to be in his 20s or 30s, apparently had been shot and beaten.

2)1-10 interchange near Tulane and Airline: The NOPD responded to a call of a shooting and upon their arrival, found two men who had apparently suffered gunshot wounds to the body. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was transported to a local hospital, according to a NOPD press release. The victim who died is a 19-year-old New Orleans man. His name is being witheld until family members are notified.

3)A 26-year old woman was found shot this morning at the corner of St. Roch Avenue and Vienna Street in Gentilly. The woman was taken to a local hospital and is currently in surgery. If all goes well, it appears she will survive.

Out west this morning, drug cartels from Nogalas and Agua Prieta are burning bodies in cars in the desert. From this we surmise that everywhere's got it's problems. Maybe we'll start a southwest affiliate of the Murder Blog

Jinx

If we believed in that sort of thing, we'd say we should have kept our big mouths shit.

1) A verbal altercation on Music St. and St. Claude escalates into a shooting, which escalates into a car accident that injures a second part when the 23 year-old shooting victim runs into a parked car occupied bt two passengers. Make of cars involved, unknown.

Thanks to staff writer Danny Monteverde for the following. This Times-Picayune story was well suited for cut and paste.

100 Years

We know we're a week late, but we can't help spending some time this Saturday reflecting on the 100 year sentence handed down this week to 25yo Eddie Harrison III, who shot a cop three time in Algiers Point after a routine traffic stop.

We just can't stop thinking about the kind of vicious impulsiveness that fuels so many people in this city. We were struck by the photo of his arrest that afternoon resurrected to accompany the story of the sentencing. The lack of bravado he has beeing dragged around by two plain clothes cops in sunglasses. 100 years is a long time in Angola.

Speaking of long times. The body of a Texas man missing since Mardi Gras has been discovered finally. The papers report that an accident, and not foul play, resulted in the man's death. he was Missing for 44 days.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office found Delatte's body of John Delatte inside his sport utility vehicle, which had been submerged in the Elmwood Canal in Metairie. The Sheriff's Office is investigating, but officials said they suspect Delatte's red Ford Expedition crashed through a metal barrier at Wilson and Vintage drives and flew into the canal, according to Col. John Fortunato, spokesman for the department. The vehicle may have been on the bottom of the canal for weeks.

They're saying this is our first official murder in a week.
In New Orleans' first slaying in a week, a man was fatally shot Friday in the B.W. Cooper public housing complex, police and the coroner's office said.
Lerman Robinson, 25, was shot about 9:50 a.m. in the 1200 block of South Johnson Street, New Orleans police said.
Police responded to a call about a shooting and found Robinson lying in a courtyard with an apparent gunshot wound to the head

Sleepless

We never sleep before travel days. It seems that even when we're 1000 miles away from NOLA we can't shake it.

This is the second such incident at the homeless encampment you might drive by on your way to the Casino, or GW Finn's, or some crap like that

A 30-year-old man was in stable condition after being stabbed in the chest Wednesday evening, according to New Orleans Emergency Medical Services.
At about 7 p.m., New Orleans police called paramedics to the intersection of Canal Street and North Claiborne Avenue,

For those of you, still close enough to find interest in a particular case, here's a follow up to the boy who was shot in the upper blocks of Frenchman last week. (Note: Party Goers fear not, you can still get high and hangout at Snug Harbor with the same marginal risk as before. We don't think they'll roll out the patrols for this one the way they did when that dishwasher got popped outside of The Praline Connection)
However, if you do still have a bone of sense in your body, the following news is about as heart breaking as you can get. When we were 15, we were content with breaking into cars to steal cellphones.

A teenager sought in the shooting death of a 17-year-old last week in the 7th Ward turned himself in to police Tuesday night, a police official said.
Jamal Fletcher, 15, was booked with one count of first-degree murder in the shooting death of Lance Zarders in the 1600 block of Frenchmen Street.

Monica King, 26, was arrested at Ochsner West Bank and booked with attempted second-degree murder after she admitted to deputies that she stabbed her 24-year-old husband Saturday afternoon because she was upset with him for staying out too late Friday night

Study Questions

We wake to find this in our inbox, in response to yesterday's post:

the male has a name - and a devastated bunch of people who care about what has happened to him. Not to mention how this has, in turn, had them re-examining how they look at murder in this city
-Leigh C.

They all have names, Leigh C. They all have people who care. It's long past time for an examination.

Even we're confused about this post on WWLTV.com. It seems like this is actually the second murder in the upper blocks of Frenchman street. One on Sunday, and then this one on Thursday. The fact is, we didn't report it on Friday because we could sort it out. Now, we're pretty sure we can list it.

Police said they found a 17-year-old male lying in the street in the 1600 block of Frenchman Street near the corner of North Derbigny around 9 p.m. Thursday. He had been shot several times and died at the scene.

Back Logs

We've been sleeping in on account of the time change. Sleep is the cousin of death they say.

1)A New Orleans man was gunned down Saturday evening in the middle of an Uptown street. The fatal shooting took place shortly after 6 p.m. in the 7300 block of Pitt Street, near Lowerline Street. Legitimacy

Sometimes, this stuff is so stark its frightening:

A man was shot in the face Thursday night on Earhart Boulevard

Other times, it seems like pulp novel:
An unidentified woman was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds in the backyard of an Algiers home Thursday and New Orleans Police are trying to determine if the body is connected to a local woman missing since mid-February. Police found the body at about 1:10 p.m. behind a home in the 3300 block of Lancaster Street. Officers were responding to a report of a body found when they located the woman, Initially, police were not sure if the woman's death was a homicide, but after further investigation it was classified as such.An employee of the Fifth District Assessor's Office actually located the body while doing a routine measurement of the home for assessment. That worker, who did not want to be identified, said he received permission from property owners to enter the backyard, and found the body near a fence. Residents of the neighborhood said they had not smelled any foul odor from the house, and the owner of the home apparently lived there intermittently

Mostly though, its just another day in New Orleans, home of the inclemet weather and bullets.

Dear People With Agendas

Please, do not make NOMB a forum for unsubstanitated, random, slightly obssesive conspiracy theories. In the case of Kyle Brown, NOMB published some letters from the family and friends becasue we considered them to be
1) Well written
2) Grounded in fact

This does not mean its open season on letters that are, quite frankly, scaring the shit out of the ediotrs over here. Thank you.

Tired

Sometimes, this thing just wears us down to the bone. So much so we don't even feel like drinking coffee. We're burned out over here, truly, and it's only Monday for heavens sake.

Saturday -
This one sounds oddly personal.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office was looking for three or four men in a late-model blue Jeep Cherokee in connection with the kidnapping and killing of a 26-year-old River Ridge man early Saturday. Lifestyle

It occurs to us that people outside the city might maybe find the Murder Blog project a bit grotesque. Maybe they question the motives. Or maybe they need a small example of how we're living down here to understand.

Exhibit 1: Walking home, we find this on the corner of our block.

(In case you're wondering, this is the packaging for a pistol cleaning kit. Works for .40, .41, .44, .45 and 10mm! NOMB nas never heard of a .41)

In and of itself, not much. Hey, at least they're keeping them clean right? Helps with aim probably, right?

Exhibit 2
: Flip it over and you have this..

This is a map too our humble little block over here in the 9th.
